What Happens After You Send Files to Print
You hit "Send" on your artwork.
Later, boxes of finished print arrive at your office, event venue, or storefront.
Seems simple enough.
But between file submission and delivery, your project goes through several stages designed to help produce the best possible result. While every job is different, quality printing works best when you and your print team work together.
Step 1: File Review
Once we receive your files, the first step is a review.
We look for things that could affect production, such as page size, bleeds, margins, image quality, or missing elements. The goal is not to redesign your project or change your content. It is to identify potential issues before production begins.
This is where the partnership starts. You provide the final artwork and content, and we review the file setup to help catch anything that could create problems later.
Many small issues are much easier to fix before a project reaches production.
Step 2: Proofing
Next comes one of the most important steps in the process: proofing.
A proof gives us both a chance to review the project before production begins. It acts as a final checkpoint and helps confirm that the project is ready to move forward.
Before approving a proof, take a few minutes to review:
- Names and titles
- Phone numbers and website addresses
- Dates, times, and locations
- Pricing and promotional details
- Spelling and grammar
We may identify technical concerns, but you know your content best. When both sides carefully review the proof, the likelihood of surprises later drops considerably.
Step 3: Production and Finishing
Once the proof is approved, production begins.
Depending on the project, this may involve printing, cutting, folding, binding, perforating, numbering, or other finishing processes.
This stage often receives the most attention, but it is only one part of the overall print production process. Much of the work that helps a project succeed happens before the first sheet is printed.
Production is where planning, preparation, and approvals come together to create the finished piece.
Step 4: Final Check and Delivery
Before your project leaves our shop, it typically receives one final review.
Quantities are verified, finished pieces are inspected, and everything is prepared for pickup, delivery, or mailing.
These final checks help confirm that the project matches the approved specifications and is ready for its intended use.
At this point, the collaboration comes full circle. You provided the vision and content. We helped guide the project through production. Together, we helped create a better final result.
More Than Ink on Paper
A print project involves much more than uploading a file and waiting for a finished product to arrive.
From file review and proofing to production and delivery, each step plays a role in producing quality results. When you work closely with your print team, projects tend to run more smoothly, deadlines become easier to meet, and finished pieces are more likely to support your goal.
The next time you send a project to print, you will know there is quite a bit happening behind the scenes before it reaches your hands.
